Power BI Licensing and Setup

The main Power BI certification is PL-300, officially called Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate. It is a 100-minute proctored exam that tests whether you can prepare data, build a data model, create reports and visualizations, and manage and secure content in the Power BI service. It expires after 12 months unless renewed with a free online assessment.
What PL-300 actually measures
Microsoft's own exam overview lists four skill areas:
Preparing the data, using Power Query.
Modeling the data, including relationships and DAX calculations.
Visualizing and analyzing the data, building reports and dashboards.
Managing and securing Power BI, covering workspaces, permissions and datasets in the service.
Candidates are expected to already be comfortable with Power Query and DAX before sitting the exam; it tests applying those skills to realistic scenarios, not just recalling definitions. For workspace and permission concepts the exam covers, see our guide to workspaces and apps.
Exam format and renewal
The exam is proctored, runs 100 minutes, and is delivered through Pearson VUE, either in person or online. It is offered in multiple languages, including English, German, French and Spanish. Pricing is set per country or region where you sit the exam, so check Microsoft's own certification page for the figure that applies to you rather than a single global number.
The certification is valid for 12 months. Renewing it does not mean retaking the full proctored exam; Microsoft runs a free, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn that renews the credential when you pass it.
Who the exam suits
PL-300 fits people who work with Power BI regularly: data analysts, BI developers, and anyone responsible for a team's reports and dashboards who wants a way to demonstrate that skill to an employer or a client. It is not a general data analytics credential; it specifically tests Power BI skills, not SQL, Python, or another BI tool.
When to add DP-600
If your work is moving beyond Power BI reports into building the data layer itself, lakehouses, warehouses, notebooks or pipelines in Microsoft Fabric, the relevant next credential is DP-600, Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate. It follows the same shape as PL-300: a proctored exam, valid for 12 months, renewed through a free unproctored assessment. This post's subject is PL-300; if you want the full Fabric picture, start with why choose Microsoft Fabric and see our Power BI licensing guide for what Fabric adds on top of a Power BI license.
For data engineers who build pipelines, lakehouses and Spark notebooks in Fabric rather than semantic models and reports, the matching credential is DP-700, Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate. DP-600 leans toward the analytics engineer who prepares data for reporting; DP-700 leans toward ingestion, transformation and orchestration.
FAQs
How long is the PL-300 exam?
100 minutes, proctored through Pearson VUE.
Does the Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification expire?
Yes, after 12 months. Renewal is a free, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, not a repeat of the full proctored exam.
Is there a certification for Microsoft Fabric skills beyond Power BI?
Yes, DP-600, Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, for analysts and engineers building the data layer in Fabric rather than just Power BI reports.
